Raising of Jairus’ Daughter from the Dead

The centre of the composition features a bed, from which Christ helps Jairus’ daughter to rise. The elder of the synagogue, Jairus, who invited Jesus to his house to save his dying daughter, and his wife are present in the scene, immersed in prayer. The background shows the apostles Peter, James and John. The Prague canvas was a copy after a lost original by Candid. Another painting of the same size, dated 1620, is kept in the collections of Count Fugger in Babenhausen. The painting from the National Gallery in Prague comes close to Candid. Both the Babenhausen and Prague copies may possibly have come into existence in the studio of Peter Candid, on the basis of an original painting. The model for the now lost painting by Candid, the Raising of the Daughter of Jairus is a canvas of the same name by Girolamo Muziano from the Real Monastero de San Lorenzo in El Escorial. Muziano’s painting is known from a copper engraving by Nicolaus Beatrizet.
